How to Bind a Persian Rug's Fringed Edge

Why do rugs have fringes?  Fringes are merely an extension of the warp that was left over after cutting the rug off the loom, but they serve a very important function.  Fringes protect a rug's pile from becoming worn or damaged along the edges.   And, in many cases, they do suffer the brunt of the wear and tear caused by every day life, cleaning, and kids' and pets' play.  Because of this, they are often the first area of a Persian rug that needs repair or restoration.  We recommend binding the fringes when the binding has come undone, or in instances where the original weaver failed to create that barrier that protects the fringe.  Binding can extend the life of the fringes for a good many years and is an investment in the longevity of fine Persian rugs that we highly recommend.  ---www.traditionalrugrepair.com
