Moths - What They Look Like on a Rug

As any casual reader of this blog knows, moths are one of the things we fear most as admirers and restorers of hand knotted rugs and hand woven kilims.  So it is of critical importance to recognize the earliest signs of moth damage.  Moths love to devour wool rugs in dark places with poor ventilation, such as under furniture or when placed in storage.  A regular inspection schedule every few months or so will go a long way to preventing extensive damage.  Signs of moth damage will include loosened tufts of wool, new holes in your rug, and white glue-like stringy residue (which are moth larvae doing their work).  If you spot any of these signs, please take care to isolate your wool products from the affected rug and have the rug professionally cleaned as soon as possible.  If the moth infestation is severe, a separate moth treatment may be necessary and reknotting may be required.  In any case, a regular inspection schedule will save your rugs and kilims from extensive damage.  ---www.traditionalrugrepair.com
