We at Kosker Traditional Rug Repair pride ourselves at being able to spot and address fringe damage on Persian rugs from the earliest stages.  We regularly advise clients to be vigilant for any signs of weakening fringes, unraveling binding, or, in worse cases, compromised pile at the edge of a rug.  As the adage goes, a stitch in time saves nine and that is certainly the case with fringe damage.  If caught early, we can repair damaged fringe quite easily.  A reinforced binding along the fringe may be all that is needed.  If, however, the fringe damage is allowed to ensue, repair can be a lot more labor intensive, and therefore more costly.  Instead of just replacing a binding, we may have to reknot missing and damaged pile, recreate the missing fringe, and then recreate a binding to minimize the risk of further unraveling.

So what can be done to avoid having a rug's fringe damaged in the first place?  First, vacuuming the fringes should be altogether avoided.  Vacuuming fringes can tear them off the rug and can severely weaken them.  Second, pets and children pulling on fringes should be avoided when possible.  The tugging at fringes will eventually weaken them, much like with vacuuming.  Third, furniture legs should never be placed on the fringes themselves.  Chairs dragging across fringes will eventually damage them.  Lastly, a consistent inspection schedule should be set to spot damage at its earliest stages.  All these steps will go a long way to protecting fringes, and in turn, the rug itself.  ---www.traditionalrugrepair.com
