Is There a Full Proof Way to Protect My Rug from Moths?
Unfortunately, no. We get this question regularly in our business, and can always hear the disappointment from our clients when we can't provide a 100% guaranteed moth proofing service. There are definitely steps one can take, however, to minimize the risk of a moth infestation.
First, one should regularly clean all wool rugs, curtains, or clothing on a regular schedule. Even if they are not professionally cleaned or laundered, wool items should be regularly inspected. Moths love nothing more than a dirty-ish rug that is kept in storage in a dark undisturbed place like a closet or dark storage room. Regular inspection schedules can catch moth damage at its earliest stages. Second, if a moth infestation has been found, you should have your rugs and wool items cleaned as soon as possible. This will stop more damage from occurring and give you a chance to have any damage restored.
Third, (and this is where most people err) the spaces around the moth infestation must be cleaned thoroughly before returning the clean wool rugs or other items back to their places. We have found that sometimes clients fail to thoroughly clean floors, below couches and furniture, and other areas. Then, a clean rug is returned and for a while, moths may leave it alone because they do not like the scent of soap and a clean rug is not as attractive to them as one where soil particles and dirt have a chance to embed themselves deep in the knots of the pile. Eventually, however, moths will find the clean rug and a re-infestation may occur. For this reason, it is critically important to clean all the areas where a moth infestation has happened. If necessary, this may require professional help in the form of moth extermination services. Moths are tricky and can easily hide so getting this problem taken care of once and for all is of extreme importance. --www.traditionalrugrepair.com
